Plumbing Licence Victoria

Victoria (VIC)

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulates plumbing work in Victoria. To practice as a plumber, you need to have the appropriate licence.

Types of Licences

Main classes

There are 10 main classes of Plumbing Licence in Victoria:

    1. Drainage
    2. Fire Protection
    3. Gasfitting
    4. Irrigation (non-agricultural)
    5. Mechanical Services
    6. Refrigerated Air-conditioning
    7. Roofing (stormwater)
    8. Sanitary
    9. Type B Gasfitting
    10. Water Supply

Specialised classes of plumbing work

There are 5 specialised classes of plumbing licence in Victoria:

    1. Type A Appliance Servicing
    2. Type A Appliance Conversion
    3. Type B Gasfitting Advanced
    4. Backflow Prevention
    5. Thermostatic Mixing Valve

Restricted classes

There are 7 restricted classes of plumbing licence in Victoria:

    1. Mechanical Services – restricted to single head split systems work
    2. Mechanical Services – restricted to duct fixing work
    3. Roofing (Stormwater) – restricted to class 10A building work
    4. Fire Protection restricted to the routine servicing of fire hose reels (ongoing class)
    5. Fire Protection restricted to the routine servicing of unpumped hydrants and valves (ongoing class)
    6. Fire Protection restricted to the routine servicing of pumped hydrants and valves (transitional class)
    7. Fire Protection restricted to the routine servicing of fire sprinkler systems (transitional class)

Qualification & Experience Requirements

You need to meet the following requirements:

    1. Generally, Certificate III in Plumbing and/or Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services in the appropriate stream along with completion of relevant units.
    2. Relevant experience
