Plumbing Licence Queensland

Queensland (QLD)

In Queensland, plumbers licensing is regulated by Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). The Department of Natural Resources and Mines control gas plumbing.

Types of Licences

The three plumbing licence classes in Queensland are:

    1. Provisional Licence – You can apply for this if you have completed a plumbing apprenticeship.
    2. Occupational / Open Licence – Before applying for this licence, you must hold a provisional licence for a minimum of one year.
    3. Plumbing & Drainage Contractor / Nominee Supervisor – You can apply for this licence if you Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services and are able to meet the associated financial requirements. With this, you can contract for work.

Qualification & Experience Requirements

Plumbers Licence

Qualifications: Certificate III in Plumbing

Experience: Minimum 1 to 4 years experience depending on qualifications.

 

Drainers Licence

Qualifications:

Certificate III in Plumbing (that includes completion of the drainage stream)

OR

Certificate II in Drainage

Experience: At least one (1) year’s practical drainage experience

 

Water plumber – Gas

Qualifications:

You must complete the following units:

    1. CPCPWT3023A — Install and commission water heating systems; and
    2. CPCPCM2043A — Carry out WHS requirements.

AND

Hold, under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004, a gas work licence

Experience: No practical experience required

 

Water plumber – Electrical

Qualifications:

You must complete the following units:

    1. CPCPWT3023A — Install and commission water heating systems; and
    2. CPCPCM2043A — Carry out WHS requirements.

AND

Hold, under the Electrical Safety Act 2002, an electrical mechanic licence or an electrical fitter licence.

Experience: No practical experience required

 

Water plumber – irrigation

Qualifications:

Certificate III in Irrigation (AHC32416);

OR

Certificate II in Urban Irrigation (CPC20912).

Experience:

Practical experience for each of the unit competencies in the abovementioned qualifications.

 

Water plumber – fire protection (hydrants and hose reels)

Qualifications:

Certificate III in Plumbing

OR

Certificate III in Fire Protection

Experience: No practical experience is required

 

Water plumber – fire protection (commercial and industrial)

Qualifications: Certificate III in Fire Protection

Experience: No practical experience is required

 

Water plumber – fire protection (domestic and residential)

Qualifications:

  1. Certificate III in Plumbing, or Certificate III in Fire Protection plus the following units:
    1. CPCPFS3037A — Install domestic and residential life safety sprinkler systems; and
    2. CPCPFS4021A — Commission domestic and residential fire suppression sprinkler systems; and
    3. CPCPFS4024A — Design residential and domestic fire sprinkler systems.

Experience: No practical experience required

 

Water plumber – water and sanitary

Qualifications: Certificate III in Plumbing (Mechanical Services)

Experience: No practical experience is required

 

Drainer – on-site sewage facility (maintaining on-site sewage facilities)

Qualifications:

You must complete the following units:

    1. QLD334WEP01A – Maintain and service domestic treatment plants and on-site sewage facilities; and
    2. CPCPDR4013B – Design and size domestic treatment plant disposal systems.

Experience: At least six (6) months practical experience in the work within the scope of work for which the licence is issued.

 

Drainer – on-site sewage facility (carrying out OSTP installation work and maintaining on-site sewage facilities)

Qualifications:

You must complete the following units:

    1. QLD334WEP01A – Maintain and service domestic treatment plants and on-site sewage facilities; and
    2. CPCPDR4013B – Design and size domestic treatment plant disposal systems; and
    3. CPCPCM2043A – Carry out work health and safety requirements; and
    4. CPCPDR2022A – Install domestic treatment plants; and
    5. CPCPDR3023A – Install on-site disposal systems; and
    6. BSBSMB401A – Establish legal and risk management requirements of small businesses.

Experience:

At least six (6) months practical experience in the work within the scope of work for which the licence is issued

Checklist

    1. Certificate and Transcript of qualifications
    2. Financial documents (for contractor types only)
    3. Identification documents
    4. Written references
    5. A current copy of your Record of Registration form ASIC, if you are contracting under a trading name
    6. If you are contracting under a partnership, proof of the business partnership
    7. The applicable fees
