Engineering & Technology

Wide range of engineering courses in Australia

Whether it's civil, mechanical, electrical, electronic, telecommunications, chemicals, computers, mechatronics, materials, agricultural, maritime, mining, petroleum, geological, manufacturing, aerospace, environmental or biomedical, Australia offers a vast array of engineering courses nationally. It gives you the opportunity to specialise in your chosen field. There are also Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses available, what help the applicants to prepare them for assistant engineering or technology engineering positions and also lead them to university pathway. If you already work as an engineer, Australian universities also offer a range of engineering postgraduate programmes (such as the Master of Engineering Business Administration) that will allow you to take the next step in your career.

Tuition fees

Australian institutes offer affordable tuition fees structure for international students. It starts from $6000 AUD to $19,000AUD per semester.

Excellent employment prospects

Recent engineering graduates, on average, earn $60,705–one of the highest salaries in any field, according to The Good Universities Guide 2013. Australia is currently experiencing a widespread shortage of engineers, especially in states with the highest mining and resource growth— Western Australia and Queensland. The high demand for graduates means that there are good prospects for jobs in Australia amongst international students studying engineering. International graduates are vital to meet Australia's lack of engineering skills, with skilled migrant engineers accounting for more than half the Australian workforce supply of newly qualified engineers, ANET figures show. Engineering graduates working in Australia can expect high wages to earn too.

Courses available

- Diploma of engineering (Mechanical/ Electrical/ Civil etc.)
- Advanced diploma of Engineering (Mechanical/ Electrical/ civil etc.)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical/ Electrical/ Civil/ Aeronautical/ Mechatronic/ Oceanography etc.)
- Master of Engineering (Mechanical/ Electrical/ Civil/ Aeronautical/ Mechatronic/ Oceanography etc.)

Opportunities to migrate to Australia

The field of engineering is experiencing rapid growth in Australia. Because skilled migration is linked to Australia’s economic needs, international students who are qualified in engineering are considered a high priority for permanent residency visas. Graduates may choose to take up one of the following migration opportunities:
ï‚· stay in Australia after graduating to gain skilled work experience through a post study work visa or a Skilled- Graduate (Temporary) visa.
ï‚· gain sponsorship with their employer through the Employer Nomination Scheme or Regional Sponsored Migration
ï‚· Apply for permanent residency through Australia’s Skill Select skilled migration program.

Work experience opportunities

Work experience is a vital part of engineering courses in Australia, ensuring that graduates have the practical experience and skills required by employers in the workforce. Work experience may be completed through a ‘co-op’ course that includes a work placement at an Australian company or through other compulsory and voluntary internships. Also look out for the Engineers Australia Professional Year Program, which is a 12-month work experience program for international students that allows them to gain valuable experience in an Australian engineering company and increases their prospects of gaining permanent residency through Skill-select.

Professional accreditation

Engineers Australia is Australia's professional engineering body in charge of accrediting undergraduate engineering programmes. All those who complete an accredited programme will be eligible to become members. Accreditation ensures that Australian institutions offering courses in engineering meet high standards and produce students with the skills and knowledge needed by industry employers. The benefit of professional accreditation is that in countries such as the USA, the UK, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, the degree will be recognised internationally.
