Visa lodging time

In order to be eligible for this visa, you must lodge your application within 6 months of your course completion. The “completion date” is the day you get your final results. Many students misunderstand this thinking the graduation date is the critical date. Unfortunately, it is not the case. Since the graduation date might be months after the completion day, there are many applications got refused just because of this simple mistake. Therefore, it is really important to lodge your visa at the right time.

University documents

To lodge your application, you need to provide a completion letter issued by your institution stating your start. You also need to finish date and confirm you have completed your course.

However, not all education intuitions are allowed to provide this paper, only CRICOS institutions can do so. Also, most universities/colleges do not issue this automatically, you might need to request this after finishing your course.

Time spent in Australia

According to the visa requirements, you have to physically be in Australia for at least 16 months between the commencing date and finish date. Many students due to course exemptions or spending lots of time overseas could face this common issue.

We recommend you to carefully check your time spending in Australia before applying for the 485 visa.

One – time application

Please keep in mind a person only obtains 485 visa once in their lifetime. It means after your 485-temporary resident expires, you might apply for another student visa but there is no more 485 visa further issued.

Choose the correct stream

There are two different streams for 485 temporary visa- the Graduation Work Stream and the Post Study Workstream.

They sound similar but actually, the Post Study Workstream is more considerable due to it might last for 2- 4 years. However, you need to undertake Skill Assessment and your qualification has to be on the MLTOL in order to obtain this stream.

Therefore, depending on your situation and education pathway, you need to ensure you go through a right stream. Otherwise, your application might be rejected.

The 485 visa is a great way to further your stay in Australia, also an opportunity to improve your eligibilities applying for PR. Recently, students who lodge their visa might miss some of the critical requirements and lose their opportunity to access the program.

This type of visa sounds straightforward with a little room for error. However, once the mistake is made, it is often impossible to be fixed.
